Be careful who you tell. Remember that it becomes harder to keep things a secret, in direct proportion to the number of people that you tell. Only a key group of people should know at first. If you want to expand the guest list, you will have to invite others at the last possible moment. This is the only way that the secret won't get out and back to the birthday boy or girl.
One of the first things you should do is select a theme for your girls birthday party. The best place to start is her interests. What is your girl into these days? Does she have a favorite hobby or TV show? If your girl is old enough, you can ask her what theme she would prefer. If you are planning a surprise birthday party, then you can look for help from her friends.
From the time you order your supplies until the day of your kid's birthday party, you can help keep your child interested in the theme with some special activities. If you plan a Princess-themed party for a little girl, you can mail her a birthday card and sign the name of her favorite princess. You can take your little boy on a real train ride to keep him excited about a Thomas the Tank Engine theme, or take your child to the zoo if the theme of your kid's birthday party is jungle animals.
Young boys will like their birthday parties to be based on the theme of their super heros, favourite wrestlers, games and sports. They not only want all the accessories and cake to be based on that particular theme rather they want to dress up like their favourite characters in order to look superior and to show off other friends. Boys like blues and yellows as the basic colours and will not like too bright colours.
Planning is vitally important! It is important to plan well in advance of the party! Remember that on top of all the usual party planning, you will have to keep certain aspects very secret. This leads to the need for even more planning.
