The tendency to hand out invitations in public places tracks through the grades. In the hubbub that followed a middle school play, I witnessed one preteen distributing birthday party invitations to a delighted crowd surrounding her. Glancing around, I noticed other youngsters also watched the excitement, and were not as pleased about it.
Children are developing their own personalities, so their likes and dislikes can change dramatically in just a short period of time. On several occasions, I've heard stories from party-planning parents who began planning their kids birthday party a couple months in advance, only to have their child lose interest in the theme completely before their big day arrived. There are a few ways you can try to avoid this.
Birthdays are special occasions in the lives of everyone and having a party on your birthday is a way of celebrating this occasion. Before getting into birthday party ideas, we need to categorize birthday parties; whether the birthday party is of a child or an adult; and whether it is of a boy or a girl.
Be creative with the food! While birthday cake and punch is fine, for a casual gathering, it doesn't take much more effort to make the party food really shine. If you are worried about budget, you can ask each party guest to bring a favorite party dish (or something reminiscent of the birthday boy or girl), to add as a potluck favorite. A taco, soup or potato bar, can feed a lot of people, without putting a major dent in the budget, and best of all most of the food can be prepared ahead. For a really easy solution for food, you can have the party at the birthday celebrant's favorite restaurant, just be sure to let the each of the party guests know the menu prices, if you won't be picking up the tab.
One might think there's nothing more innocent and free spirited than the act of extending birthday party invitations. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
